Children Cooking: Red, White & Blue Cake

This weekend I watched my good friend make a cake with her 7 year-old granddaughter and I was impressed with how she orchestrated the whole event to be fun, peaceful and successful. Here is a recipe for a Labor Day Red, White & Blue Cake involving children and having a good memory time as well as a great cooking result.

What You Need:

1 lb. Strawberries
1 cup Sugar
Bowl
Angel Food cake
Blueberries
2 whipped creams 8 oz
Towel or sheet
I child or more
Glass bowl (optional)
Mixing spoon
Spatula (optional)

Cut strawberries into thirds. Mix with sugar in a bowl. Let sit refrigerated for at least 2 hours.

Place a towel or sheet on the kitchen floor. Put child on towel with a bowl and spoon.

Let child mix whipped cream until smooth.

Slice Angel Food Cake horizontally in thirds.

If using a glass bowl, place that with 1st layer cake on towel in front of child. Otherwise, put a cake dish with 1st layer of Angel Food cake.

Allow the child use the spatula to alternate 1 layer of whipped cream with strawberries and another with whipped cream and blueberries until all 3 layers are finished. If not using a bowl, ice the sides of the cake with whipping cream.

Pour extra strawberry/sugar juice on top of cake. Place cake on counter.

Shake child's clothes off on towel or sheet. Pull towel or sheet up by corners to shake crumbs in yard, compost pile or trash.

There you have it! A cooking experience to remember with no aggravation - only fun.

Happy Labor Day!

Change Bad Behavior - Behavior Modification Works

No one likes to walk around on egg shells or land mines in their home or workplace. Many times, however, life requires you to deal with difficult people. Maybe the best solution is to leave the situation. Leaving may be difficult though when it comes to your work place and obviously an impossible choice when it’s your child.

Over the years, I’ve experienced first hand how positive reinforcement and natural consequences completely transform challenging people. I’m double blessed to have taught mentally challenged adults in group home settings and received the proper training to do so.

One particular group home I worked for specialized in clients with extreme behavior problems, from biting and assault to breaking windows. Every staff member received ongoing behavior modification with positive reinforcement training.

This was all new to me, but the results were incredible! Within a few weeks, clients were doing more self care. By three months time, the same clients who came to us eating with their hands, stuffing their mouths and getting food all over their face, could dine out at the best restaurants in Boston. The extreme and violent behaviors simply melted away.

This was over 25 years ago. At the time I had a toddler and a baby at home. I immediately saw how the same positive behavior modification techniques I learned at work I could also apply to raising my own children. I not only saw astounding results, but they became astounding adults who continue to be positive reinforcers all on their own.

I started applying them to all my relationships. The same techniques worked on everyone. After much encouragement from trusted people in my life who kept saying I needed to share this with the world, I bring you this little eBook to help with classroom, domestic or work place stress. With a little creativity, you will have great results with your cats and dogs also.
